From Mokitown to the Mascot Summit

For a quarter of a century, MobileKids has been promoting children's road safety education around the world. To mark the occasion, we have compiled 25 numbers, facts and highlights from the programme’s history.

1. Over the past 25 years, MobileKids has helped more than three million children navigate traffic safely through hands-on activities, events and educational materials.

2. MobileKids has been active in 15 countries worldwide, including China, India, South Korea, Hungary and the United States.

3. In 2001, “Mokitown” was launched as one of the first virtual road safety education platforms on the internet. In this digital environment, children from around the world could move around as avatars, chat with one another and learn through play.

4. "Mokitown" received several international awards, including the Silver World Medal at the New York Festivals, the Epica Award from the European advertising trade press, and Canada’s Traffic Safety Award for an International Website.

5. In 2004, The Nimbols, an animated road safety series commissioned by Mercedes-Benz, premiered. A total of 26 episodes were produced and broadcast, among others, on the German-language television channel Super RTL.

6. Since 2016, MobileKids in the South Korean metropolis of Seoul has gone beyond traditional road safety education. Together with municipal authorities and the police, the initiative also helps shape the streetscape: yellow footprints and warning signs at pedestrian crossings remind children and adults to stop and look in both directions before crossing the road.

7. Around the world, numerous Mercedes-Benz employees volunteer for MobileKids, for example by delivering learning sessions in nursery schools and primary schools. In the Indian cities of Bangalore and Pune, volunteers also improved routes to school in 2018 by installing more than 200 traffic signs, mirrors and road reflectors and repairing 450 potholes.

8. In 2010, the era of Moki began. The blue mascot with traffic lights on its head won a public casting competition and has given MobileKids a distinctive face ever since.

9. Mascot Moki regularly appears as a walking act at events such as primary school roadshows in Hungary, the road safety education park in Seoul, the IAA mobility show in Munich and the mascot gathering at the Cannstatter Wasen festival in Stuttgart.

10. Since 2017, the specially developed “Road Safety Experience Course” has been implemented in 210 primary schools across China. It provides practical knowledge for safer journeys to school and has already reached more than 250,000 children.

11. Between 2010 and 2019, more than 30 school classes from across Germany received awards for projects submitted as part of the MobileKids School Campaign. Contributions ranged from traffic safety films and safety checks to concepts for safer school routes and cycling proficiency tests. Prizes included road safety training with a school bus at the participating schools.

12. In 2024, MobileKids supported the “Clifford Takes a Ride” tour organised by partner organisation Safe Kids Worldwide in the United States. At four YMCA summer camps in Atlanta, Jacksonville, Coppell and Hamilton Township, Safe Kids Worldwide reached nearly 26,000 families and distributed more than 30,000 books and safety kits containing reflective accessories, bicycle helmets and educational materials.

13. To reach children, families and teachers directly, MobileKids has been present at numerous events, including SAFE-ROADS events in China and India, interactive primary school roadshows in Hungary, Mercedes-Benz celebrations and anniversaries, several appearances at Germany’s largest education fair didacta, and the Citizen’s Festival hosted by the Federal President of Germany in Berlin.

In the United States, a road safety book featuring Clifford, the famous red dog from children’s literature, was developed with Safe Kids Worldwide. In China, MobileKids published a research-based book that presents road safety as a shared responsibility on the path towards child-friendly cities.

The MobileKids school materials developed for use in Germany (ISBN 978–3–942406–25–3) and their corresponding bilingual learning units were created in cooperation with the University of Koblenz-Landau and Klett MEX GmbH. In other countries, tailored or independently developed resources were created to suit local conditions.

20. MobileKids offers 27 explanatory videos across the five categories Do It Right!, Did You Know?, Moki Check, Road Safety Around the World and How MobileKids Works. The collection is continuously being expanded.

The MobileKids Success Story

With MobileKids, Mercedes-Benz combines its commitment to safety with social responsibility for the next generation. What once began with local road safety activities has now become an international educational program for safe mobility for children and young people—from educational offerings and infrastructure projects to strengthening road safety in the broader social context. School visits, hands-on experiences, teaching materials, and digital formats have shaped MobileKids over many years and made it visible in numerous countries. To mark the anniversary, MobileKids and Moki are now setting off on a journey around the world and making the wide range of activities tangible across the globe.

21. The colourful 20-page Moki Activity Book invites children to explore road safety through colouring pages, puzzles and safety tips. Published in German and English in 2024, the free booklet can be used both at home and in schools worldwide.

22. On two occasions, Willi Weitzel, best known from the popular German television programme Willi wills wissen, represented MobileKids at the Citizen’s Festival of the Federal President of Germany in Berlin, explaining important traffic rules to children in an engaging and accessible way.

23. From 2016 to 2021, the German-Brazilian school Colégio Humboldt in São Paulo reached more than 1,000 children annually with MobileKids materials through its road safety programme Auto Humboldt. The collaboration had already begun in 2014 with the provision of teaching materials for educators.

24. In 2025, MobileKids launched its first e-learning course for teachers in Germany. The course introduces educators to road safety education with MobileKids and demonstrates how the school materials can be used in the classroom. It marks the starting point for further digital learning offerings.

25. Four times a year, the bilingual MobileKids newsletter (German and English) provides updates and insights on developments in road safety education.
